Monsters in the Metropolis: Social Centres, Cultural Production and the Re-structuring of Capital

Here's an interesting text examining the position of social centers as nodes of insurgent knowledge production in the city from the European Conference of Social Centres in Barcelona/Terrassa, which took place on January 8th – 10th, 2009. (via reclaiming spaces)

For those of you not familiar with the term "social center", it refers to a European phenomena, facilitated by a relative ease of squatting, in which autonomous movements create their own self-managed long-term spaces of political education and cooperation, with little to no resources that would traditionally fund such an enterprise. These social centers, developed instead through militant contestation of the property regime, participatory democracy, and creative reuse of urban surplus often go on to provide an important platform and resource for social movement in the city. The call for the recent conference of social centers can be read on edu-factory.org - if there's more material that came out of this meeting, please post a comment with a link!
