One of Baltimore's best street journalists, Bill Hughes, covered two actions from last week. On Tuesday, July 2nd, a demonstration was held at the Social Security Headquarters in Woodlawn, where activists spoke out against proposed cuts to Social Security benefits. On Friday, July 5, hundreds of Baltimore males march against violence on North Avenue.

On Wednesday, June 26, 2013, human rights activists staged a demonstration at noon in front of the White House. They demanded that president Obama close Guantanamo. Bill Hughes captured the arrest of human rights activist, Diane Wilson, who climbed over the White House fence. He also speaks with other activists who attended the action, including Medea Benjamin and Dr. Margaret Flowers.

Despite an overcast sky, interspersed with occasional rain showers, social justice advocates joined together in solidarity on Saturday morning, May 11 around 10 AM in Baltimore, Maryland, to launch the “Poor Peoples Campaign.” The plan was for the activists, numbering in the hundreds, to rally at the East Baltimore site (Biddle St. and Montford Ave.) and then march out of the city along Route 1 (Washington Blvd.), untill they reached, later that day - College Park, Maryland.

At the Parkview Recreation Center in West Baltimore, on Thursday evening, April 18, 2013, the Rev. Dr. Minister Paris J. Evans served as the host and one of the speakers at the “CODE RED” community-based outreach meeting. The program was mainly focused on addressing the issues of “poverty, the crime rate . . . and reducing homicides in targeted areas, while assisting the crime victims.”

Drone warfare, its legality, ethics and military use, was examined at a workshop held on the campus of Johns Hopkins University, at Remsen Hall, in Baltimore, MD, on Tuesday afternoon, April 16, 2013. Medea Benjamin, a peace & social justice activist and cofounder of CODEPINK, spoke about legality, ethics and military use of drones. Five days ealier, over a hundred Human Rights activists staged a “Day of Action” demonstration in front of the White House to remind President Obama to keep his word on closing Guantanamo. Peace activist, Frank Cordaro of the Catholic Worker Community in Des Moines, Iowa, read a poem written by one of the Guantanamo prisoners.

Members of Unite Here, Local 7, and their Social Justice allies, staged a demonstration on Wednesday afternoon, April 3, 2013, at BWI-Thurgood Marshall Airport. It took place at the departure terminal of Southwest Airlines. The workers are fighting AirMall, USA, the company placed in charge of concessions at the airport by the State of Maryland. The union is demanding improved wages, benefits and working conditions for their members. Since the State hires AirMall, USA, Governor Martin O’Malley has a potentially important role to play in resolving this dispute.

On Thursday afternoon, March 21, 2013, a demonstration was held at McKeldin Square, in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Its purpose was to raise awareness among the citzenry of the rising medical debt in this country and the need to adopt a single payer healthcare system. A recent study documented that nearly “60 percent” of the bankruptcies in the nation are related to an inability to “pay medical bills.” Speaking on camera about this matter is the social justice activist, Dr. Margaret Flowers of Baltimore City.
