"Dr. Margaret Flowers Opposes the TPP Trade Agreement" By: Bill Hughes
On Wed. Sept. 18th, in front of Penn Station in Bmore, Dr. Margaret Flowers shared her views on the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement. She labeled it, “NAFTA on steroids.” Dr. Flowers underscored that the treaty has been “negotiated in secret,” and its terms, “classified.” She said that President Barack Obama has asked to “Fast Track” the treaty.

On late Friday afternoon, August 30th, peace and justice activists held an anti-war demonstration. Their message was clear and cogent: “No U.S. war with Syria!” The rally took place at Centre and North Charles Streets at the base of the Washington Monument, in the historic Mt. Vernon District. The activists insisted there was no clear evidence that Syria had perpetrated any “chemical attack” on its own people.

On Wednesday afternoon, August 21, 2013, Pfc. Bradley Manning’s attorney David Coombs held a press conference at a hotel in Hanover, MD. It is located just minutes from Fort Meade, where his client the Wikileaks whistle-blower had earlier received a 35-year prison sentence from the trial judge, Col. Denise Lind.

On Tuesday evening, August 13, 2013, at the New Shiloh Baptist Church in West Baltimore, Bill Hughes discussed the upcoming “March on Washington” with long-time advocate for social justice, Marvin “Doc” Cheatham. Hughes also covered the August 17, 2013 rally for “immigrant rights," which was held in front of the White House.

About three years ago, Stephen Pitcairn, age 23, a medical student at Johns Hopkins University, was murdered on North Charles Street, only blocks from his home in Charles Village, Baltimore, MD. On Wednesday evening, July 24, 2013, poet Shirley Brewer read from her book, “After Words.” It deals with the tragedy of Mr. Pitcairn’s death. Ms.

The Charles Theatre, in Baltimore, is presenting the film, “Dirty Wars.” It features investigative journalist, Jeremy Scahill, and it deals with how America conducts its many and far-flung “covert wars.” On Friday night, July 26th, peace activist and author, David Swanson, shared his views on the film with me. Later, he also led a discussion with the audience about the documentary.

Street journalist, Bill Hughes, covers three actions this week: the "March For Justice" on Saturday, the fair development demonstration on Wednesday, and the "Flush the TPP" action on Tuesday.

On Thursday afternoon, July 11, 2013, CODEPINK activists and their human rights allies staged a lively demonstration in front of the U.S. Justice Department in Washington, D.C. They were there to protest the Justice Department’s “relentless campaign to hunt down and block whistleblower Edward Snowden’s attempt to seek [political] asylum.” They also repeated their demand that the Justice Department “stop the NSA from its [unlawful] surveillance of Americans and foreigners.”

On Sunday morning, July 14, 2013, a press conference was held in response to the “not guilty” verdict in the controversial George Zimmerman case. He was charged with the murder of an unarmed, seventeen-year-old, Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida, which occurred on Feb. 26, 2012. McKeldin Square in the Inner Harbor of Baltimore was the site of the press conference. Representatives from the Baltimore Peoples Power Assembly and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC Baltimore) shared their views on the case and their plans for “future protests.” Speaking on camera are The Rev. Cortly C.D. Witherspoon, Sharon Black, Lee Patterson and Steven Ceci.
