As we roll into 2013, we bring you a flashback from the Baltimore-based and organized Mobilizing and Organizing from Below Conference (MOBconf). Please enjoy this audio from the workshop: Don't Waste Time in Organizing, Decolonize!

Description:

Don't Waste Any Time in Mourning, Decolonize!

Facilitated by: Jimmy Johnson

Occupy Wall Street and its offshoots throughout North America offer radical goals while evading the concern that the land itself has long been occupied. Israel's July 14 movement set up tent cities across the country to protest housing costs, doing so on land from which Palestinians have been forcibly displaced into refugee tent cities in Lebanon and elsewhere. Australian, Canadian, US, and Israeli anarchists fight for migrant rights, but do so in a settler society. The United States, United Kingdom, and France still hold formal colonies, and current anarchist discourse mostly recognizes Global South decolonization as happening with the establishment of nation-states basically adopting the political economic frameworks of their colonizers. The specter of colonialism (metropole, settler, and internal) pervades radical discourse, yet it largely passes without notice. This participatory workshop will explore anarchistic approaches to decolonization and the decolonization of anarchist discourse.

Jimmy Johnson is a longtime antiapartheid organizer in Palestine and cofounder of Decolonize Detroit.
